What is Payment Protection Insurance or PPI?
Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) or Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Cover (ASU) has been assumptively sold by many lenders for over 30 years.
Whether you had a Loan, a Credit Card, Hire Purchase Agreement or Mortgage the purpose of this insurance was to ensure loan repayments were paid if you were unable to work through illness, made unemployed or become incapacitated. It has emerged many payment protection insurance policies were mis sold.
These policies are usually very expensive for the level of cover they offer and many policies have significant exemptions making it difficult or even impossible for policyholders to make a valid claim.
Mis Sold Payment Protection Insurance
Banks and lenders were mis selling their payment protection insurance through not fully explaining what their policy covered, telling consumers that PPI was compulsory or suggesting that with PPI insurance they were more likely to be approved for a loan. In serious cases some lenders added payment protection insurance onto the price of the loan without the borrower’s consent.
Am I Eligible to Claim Compensation?
Firstly, it’s important to check through your policy documentation and determine whether PPI was valid for you and your circumstances at the time. Payment protection insurance can provide valuable protection for people who have lost their job, but the problems emerged when PPI was being mis sold to people who didn’t necessarily need or want it.
PPI Complaints & Claims
PPI Complaints often occur when people are unable to make a claim because their policy cover is very limited. For instance, if you need time off work for medical reasons, it’s quite possible that your policy will not cover common illnesses such as stress or chronic conditions. Other common PPI complaints come from people were retired or unemployed at the time of purchase. PPI is designed to replace an income and will not pay out if you are not earning or work less than 16 hours a week.
"I never even knew about claiming back mis-sold financial products. I would like to say a huge THANK-YOU to ABC who kept me informed every step of the way. The process has been very easy and it was also settled very quickly."
